Data from the National Debt Register indicates that as many as 290,000 Poles have problems with alimony arrears, 94 percent of whom are men.

"This is one of the highest amounts in history," a statement said.

In the past three years, debt due to unpaid alimony has increased tenfold among people aged 18 to 25.

The average alimony debt in Poland is PLN 53,000, and if the debtor has been in arrears for years, this amount is often far higher.

"While in older age groups alimony debt has remained at a similar level or has decreased in recent years, among young people aged 18-25, this debt doubles each year," said Adam Łącki, head of the National Debt Register.

"In 2018, it was almost PLN 150,000, and today it is already PLN 10.5 million. Over the past three years, it has increased almost tenfold," he added.

Fifty-five percent of those who do not pay alimony also have debts to other creditors, such as banks or debt collection agencies.
