The daughter of the only male giraffe in the herd, Karim, and the female Justyna, Parsley measured 175 cm and weighed 49 kg at birth.
Her biological mother refused to nurse her, which would have led to a grim fate in the wild. Thanks to the zoo staff’s round-the-clock care, Parsley was saved and is now thriving. Visitors will soon be able to see her in the exhibit.
"We’re sharing the news of her birth after a little over 4 weeks because we wanted to ensure her health was stable before announcing it. Thankfully, Parsley is very happy and frolics energetically, often making it hard to keep up with her," the Warsaw Zoo announced on social media.
The name "Parsley" is the English equivalent of the Polish "Pietruszka," and this year, all newborns at the zoo have names starting with the letter "P" and relate to plants.
The Rothschild's giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis) at the Warsaw Zoo, a subspecies of the Nubian giraffe, is among the most endangered, with fewer than 2,000 individuals left in the wild.
