Whooping cough: symptoms, causes and prevention methods

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial disease caused by Bordetella pertussis. It is characterized by severe coughing fits that can end with a distinctive "whooping" sound as the patient inhales.

The illness often begins with cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose and mild cough, which then progress to intense, prolonged coughing spells. Pertussis primarily affects young children, especially those who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated, but it can also impact adolescents and adults. Pregnant women should particularly ensure they are vaccinated against whooping cough.

In severe cases, the disease can lead to complications like pneumonia or seizures, making early vaccination and prompt treatment essential.

In Poland, children are required to receive whooping cough vaccinations, and adults should also keep up with regular vaccinations, including boosters every ten years.
