Poland has 9 million people suffering from obesity, but only one percent of them are treated with modern, comprehensive care, experts warn.
According to Eurostat data, 58 of the population in Poland is obese, which is higher than the EU average of 53.

The condition, linked to over 200 complications such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, costs the healthcare system around PLN 15 billion, annually, and the number is expected to grow further.

Specialists emphasize the need for systemic solutions, including advanced therapies, specialized obesity treatment centers, and public awareness campaigns.

Currently, most patients receive only symptomatic care, addressing complications like diabetes or hypertension without tackling obesity itself.

Experts argue for broader access to innovative treatments and subsidized medications to ensure affordability.

Doctors are urging the development of broader initiatives, such as multidisciplinary obesity clinics, to diagnose and treat patients earlier, warning that without action, rising costs and the growing number of obese children—already the fastest rate in the EU—could overwhelm the healthcare system.

According to Eurostat data, 58% of Poland’s population is overweight, surpassing the EU average of 53%. Polish patients with obesity wait an average of five years to receive a proper diagnosis.
