Last year, the average temperature in the Baltic was 9.3°C, which is 0.8°C above the long-term average. Only in 2020 was the water warmer, and the average temperature in the Baltic Sea from 1997 to 2021 was 9.6°C.

The North Sea, on the other hand, saw a record temperature of 12.1°C, the highest since 1969. Over the past 35 years, the Baltic Sea has warmed by 1.9°C.

These changes are a direct consequence of climate change, with the Baltic warming by 1.9°C since 1990. As a result of this warming, oxygen levels in the Baltic Sea are decreasing, affecting marine ecosystems.
