Abandoned teen, overcrowded apartment
According to local officials, the unnamed woman departed for the U.S. after informally handing her teenage daughter over to a neighbor—an arrangement authorities say holds no legal status. While there had been no prior social welfare concerns, the situation only came to light after the teenager informed a teacher that she was living separately from her mother and responsible for more than 30 cats.
Five days later, police discovered the overcrowded apartment. The child has since been placed in a social services–run children’s home, and rescue workers took custody of the cats.
“It was horrific, several dozen animals living in under 30 square meters,” said Izabela Płudowska of the local Chrońmy Zwierzęta (Protect the Animals) association. She reported only two unsanitary litter boxes were provided, with unsterilized cats breeding freely.
Police and the family court have since opened an investigation. According to officials, evidence is being collected to present charges against the mother upon her return to Poland. The youngest kittens have been taken in by volunteers and an animal charity, while the remaining cats are housed at a local animal shelter.
