The country’s sports ministry on Tuesday said it was allocating PLN 35 million (EUR 7.7 million, USD 8.3 million) to subsidise a coaching programme for children aged five to 13, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

The programme, run by the Polish Football Association (PZPN), the national governing body for the sport, is expected to benefit more than 57,000 young players and over 3,700 coaches throughout the country.

"Let's remember that champions don't come out of the woodwork," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in a Facebook message on Tuesday.

The cash boost was announced after Morawiecki and his sports minister, Danuta Dmowska-Andrzejuk, earlier this month met with the head of the Polish Football Association, Zbigniew Boniek, to discuss ways of reopening sports in the country amid a coronavirus lockdown.

In all, the Polish government plans to spend PLN 130 million on the “Football School Certification” programme over the next three years, the IAR news agency reported.
