Madrid Open: Poland’s Świątek into women's singles 3rd round

Poland’s Iga Świątek has cruised into the third round of the women's singles at the Madrid Open tennis tournament in Spain, with a straight-set win over German player Laura Siegemund.

The 19-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 17 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), ousted the German qualifier 6-3, 6-3 in their second-round encounter on Saturday.

Świątek on Friday advanced to the round of 16 of the women’s doubles competition at the Madrid Open partnering with Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States.

The Polish teenager in February won the Adelaide International tournament in Australia, earning her second singles title.

Świątek in October won the French Open, claiming her maiden Grand Slam title and becoming the first Pole to lift a Grand Slam singles trophy.
