Boruc, 42, has legendary status at both clubs, having made his name at Legia and spent his best years at Celtic, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

He joined Legia from Pogoń Siedlce at the age of 19 and made his debut in 2002, winning the Polish league in his first season.

Boruc’s impressive performances for Legia caught the eye of Celtic’s coaching staff. In 2005, he moved to Glasgow, helping the Bhoys to three Scottish titles in five years. He also played a key role in some memorable Champions League nights.

In all, “the Holy Goalie” played 194 games for Celtic, keeping 77 clean sheets. It was at this time that he came to be regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

For years, Boruc was also the first-choice shot-stopper for Poland’s national team, notably at the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship.

In 2010, he moved to Italy with Fiorentina, before returning to Britain with Southampton and Bournemouth. He made 128 appearances in the English Premier League.

In 2020, Boruc returned to Legia, helping them to the Polish title the following year. Towards the end of the 2021/2022 season, he announced his retirement from football.

Wednesday’s game is Boruc’s final farewell, as he plays for Legia for the last time, against one of his former teams.

The match at Warsaw's Polish Army Stadium starts at 6 p.m.
