Tennis: Poland's Świątek advances to Round 2 at Australian Open

Poland's world No. 1 Iga Świątek has progressed to the second round of the 2024 Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.

Świątek defeated America's 38-ranked Sofia Kenin 7-6, 6-2 in Round 1 on Tuesday, public broadcaster Polish Radio's polskieradio24.pl website reported.

The world no. 1 joins fellow Polish players Hubert Hurkacz and Magdalena Fręch in Round 2 of the year's first Grand Slam tournament, on the hard courts of Melbourne Park.

Poland's Athlete of the Year Świątek reached the semi-finals of Australian Open in 2022.

The 2024 Australian Open tournament runs until January 28.
