Unexpectedly, despite being the favourite Iga Świątek didn't start the fourth round match well - losing her first service game. However, she quickly took control of the situation - and won the next 12 games, finishing the duel in just one hour and seven minutes. The Polish superstar limited her rival to only 5 points scored throughout the game.
Last year, Świątek reached the final in the Spanish capital, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka, starting as a non-national.
Two other Poles were registered for the singles tournament in Madrid - Magda Linette (WTA 48th) and Magdalena Fręch (WTA 51st). In the first round, Linette defeated the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto (WTA 54th), and in the second round she lost to Sabalenka (number two in the WTA charts). In turn, Fręch lost in the first round to Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (WTA 73rd).
This year's edition of the women's tournament is its 15th installation on the WTA Tour, and it is scheduled to continue until May 5, 2024.
