Wimbledon: Poland’s Świątek through to 2nd round

Poland’s Iga Świątek has moved into the second round of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London.

The Polish star on Tuesday beat American Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the women's singles at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in the British capital.

Świątek, who is ranked world No. 1 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), will next face either Croatia's Petra Martić or British wild card Francesca Jones for a place in the last 32.

The Polish player on Monday started her 110th week at the top of the WTA world rankings, with a 3,642-point lead over second-placed American Coco Gauff.

Świątekcoached by countryman Tomasz Wiktorowski, in November 2023 regained her spot at the top of the world rankings in women's tennis after winning the season-ending WTA Finals tournament in Mexico.

The 23-year-old now leads the WTA rankings with 11,585 points, ahead of Gauff with 7,943 points, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, with 7,841.

The Pole last month won the French Open for the fourth time after defeating Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the final to claim her 22nd career singles title.
