Poland's Włodarczyk makes the women's hammer throw final at the Olympics

Three-time Olympic women's hammer throw champion, Poland's Anita Włodarczyk, achieved 71.06 m on Sunday - and qualified (barely, though...) for the finals at the Summer Games in Paris. The other Pole competing, Malwina Kopron, failed to make the final cut.

Włodarczyk, a World Record holder who also won the gold at the previous Olympics in Tokyo, got her best result in the third attempt. In the first, she threw two centimetres less, and in the second she had 70.41. This gave the Pole a 12th place - which was the last ticket for the final.

Five competitors who achieved the qualification minimum of 73.00 m made the finals - as well as the seven best of those who didn't reach this mark.

Kopron, who started in group A, with a best throw of 67.68, was classified in 23rd position.

The fight for Olympic medals in women's hammer throw is scheduled for Tuesday.
