The 31-year-old, who rides for the Soudal Quick-Step cycling team, finished ahead of countryman Jordi Meeus and the Netherlands' Olav Kooij in the race's 187.6 km fifth leg starting and ending in the southern Polish city of Katowice.

The fastest Pole, Stanisław Aniołkowski, finished eighth in Katowice on Friday.

Meanwhile, Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard, who finished runner-up in the time trial three days earlier, retained the race leader’s yellow jersey.

The sixth and penultimate leg of the 81st Tour de Pologne will see cyclists cover a 183.2 km route from the southern town of Wadowice to the Tatra mountain resort of Bukowina Tatrzańska.

More than 150 riders from 22 teams based in various countries are taking part in the seven-stage 1,050 km race, which finishes in the historic city of Kraków on Sunday.
