US Open: Poland's Świątek eases into last 16 of women’s singles

Poland’s Iga Świątek has cruised into the last 16 of the women’s singles at the US Open tennis tournament in New York, with a straight-set win over Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

The Polish world No. 1 saw off the 33-year-old Russian player 6-4, 6-2 in the third round at Flushing Meadows on Sunday.

Świątek will now face 16th-ranked Russian Liudmila Samsonova for a place in the quarterfinals at the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Świątek, a former US Open champion, is aiming for her sixth Grand Slam singles title in New York.

The 2024 US Open runs until September 9.
