The annual Independence Run was held in the Polish capital for the 34th time to celebrate the recovery of the country’s sovereignty on November 11, 1918 after 123 years of foreign rule.

The 10-kilometre route led around the city’s downtown area, with kick-off at 11:11 a.m.

As in previous years, runners were wearing the red-and-white national colours.

The Independence Run is the third in a series of three major patriotic runs in Warsaw that every year celebrate key events from the nation’s history.

The other two are the May 3rd Constitution Run, which celebrates the historic constitution that the country’s legislators adopted 233 years ago, and the Warsaw Uprising Run, which honours the revolt that broke out in the Polish capital against the occupying Nazi Germans on August 1, 1944.

Tens of thousands of runners take part in these three events every year.
