Tennis: Poland through to United Cup quarterfinals after win over Czech Republic

Poland has advanced to the quarterfinals of the United Cup mixed-teams tournament in Australia after beating the Czech Republic 2-1 in its second straight victory in the competition Down Under on Wednesday.

The mixed doubles duo of Iga Świątek and Hubert Hurkacz earned the winning point for Team Poland, defeating the Czech pairing of Tomáš Macháč and Karolina Muchova 7-6, 6-3 in a deciding clash on New Year's Day, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Hurkacz delivered his duo's 11th ace of the match to emerge victorious after one hour and 25 minutes, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) said on its atptour.com website.

"Iga is just so solid and you really can count on her shots," Hurkacz said of Świątek after the match.

Earlier in the day, Świątek beat Muchova 6-3, 6-4 in the women's singles, while Hurkacz lost 5-7, 6-3, 4-6 to Macháč in the men's singles.

Świątek is currently world No. 2 in women's tennis, while Hurkacz is ranked 16th in the world by the ATP.

Poland will face the best-placed runner-up from the groups that played in Sydney for a place in the semifinals of the mixed-teams competition, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Poland beat Norway 2-1 in its first match at the United Cup tournament in Australia on Monday.
