Tennis: Poland’s Fręch reaches Australian Open 2nd round

Poland’s Magdalena Fręch has advanced to the second round of the women’s singles competition at the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament in Melbourne.

The 27-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 26 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated Russia's Polina Kudermetova 6-4, 6-4 in the first round at Melbourne Park.

Fręch next takes on Russian world No. 73 Anna Blinkova for a place in the third round.

Poland’s world No. 2 Iga Świątek has also progressed to the second round of the Australian Open, where she will play Rebecca Šramková of Slovakia.

Meanwhile, Poland's Magda Linette and Maja Chwalińska have both crashed out of the tournament after losing their first-round matches, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

On the men's side, Poland’s world No. 17 Hubert Hurkacz will face Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in the first round in Melbourne on Monday evening local time, while 122nd-ranked countryman Kamil Majchrzak will face off against Spaniard Pablo Carreño-Busta.

The 2025 Australian Open runs until January 26.
