Athletics: Poles set to vie for medals in Nanjing

Poland has named a 14-member team for the World Athletics Indoor Championships, which begin in Nanjing, China on Friday.

Earlier this month, Szymański claimed gold in the men's 60m hurdles at the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, while Wielgosz won the women's 800m.

Other standout athletes on the Polish team for Nanjing include Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Justyna Święty-Ersetic, who will compete in the women's 400m and the 4x400m relay, and sprinter Ewa Swoboda in the women's 60m.

Some other Polish names to watch in China include Patryk Sieradzki in the men's 800m and Konrad Bukowiecki in the men's shot put.

Nearly 600 competitors from 127 countries are expected to take part in the global event, which runs from Friday to Sunday.

Team Poland won four medals, two gold, one silver and one bronze at the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn.

Alongside the victories by Szymański and Wielgosz and Skrzyszowska's bronze, Maksymilian Szwed earned silver in the men’s 400m.

The continental indoor championships were held from March 6 to 9.

Poland finished fifth in the overall medals table, trailing the Netherlands, Italy, Norway and Switzerland.

The next European Athletics Indoor Championships will be held in March 2027 in Valencia, Spain.
