Tennis: Poland’s Świątek books spot in Wimbledon semifinals

Poland’s Iga Świątek defeated Russian Ludmila Samsonova in straight sets on Wednesday to book a spot in the semifinals of the Wimbledon tennis championships for the first time.

The 24-year-old saw off Samsonova 6-2, 7-5 in the women’s singles quarterfinals as she seeks her first title at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in London.

Świątekranked world No. 4 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), will face Switzerland's Belinda Bencic for a place in the championship match.

The Polish player, coached by Belgian Wim Fissette, last month lost the final of the Bad Homburg Open grass-court tournament in Germany to American Jessica Pegula, 4-6, 5-7.

It was her first career final on grass and her first championship match on any surface since last year’s French Open.

Świątek, a former top-ranked player, has five Grand Slam titles to her name.
