Świątek has now conceded only 10 games across their three encounters. She previously defeated the 23-year-old Lys 6–0, 6–1 at this year’s Australian Open and 6–1, 6–1 in Stuttgart in 2022.
Though the scoreline was one-sided, Lys - born in Kyiv, Ukraine - put up a spirited fight, particularly in the first set, chasing down balls that seemed out of reach. Świątek, however, maintained control throughout, producing clean winners and serving with confidence — especially on her second serve - which kept her out of trouble for most of the match.
Lys earned her only break point opportunity in the fourth game of the second set, but Świątek held firm. The German narrowed the gap to 2–5 before the Pole closed out the match with a forehand winner after 72 minutes on court.
“I just focused on myself and knew what my plan was,” Świątek said in her post-match interview. “Eva played some great down the lines and was able to play some fast balls. It wasn’t easy. I’m happy I just did my job.”
Tauson next as Świątek eyes ranking gains in North America
Next, Świątek will face 22-year-old Clara Tauson of Denmark, seeded 16th, who earlier defeated Ukraine’s Yulia Starodubtseva 6–3, 6–0. The Polish star leads their head-to-head 2–0, including a recent straight-sets victory in the fourth round of Wimbledon this July.
Montreal is one of three key hard-court events in North America where Świątek is aiming to close the ranking gap to current world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. After Montreal, she is scheduled to compete in Cincinnati before heading to New York for the US Open at the end of August.
Although Świątek has yet to claim the Canadian Open title - a tournament that alternates annually between Montreal and Toronto — she reached the semifinals in Montreal in 2023. This year’s tournament concludes on Thursday.
