Offering a cheerful muchas gracias in Spanish, Jahanbakhsh said the Iranian team has been warmly received in Mexico after being forced to relocate its training base from Tucson, Arizona.

Iran is now based in Tijuana and travels to the United States for its matches.

"I think everyone on our team loves the Mexicans," Jahanbakhsh said after Iran's 0-0 draw with Belgium in its second group-stage match, a result that kept alive its hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

Jahanbakhsh's remarks were published by Iran's state-run IRNA news agency on X.

"It's unbelievable how warmly we've been welcomed. The hospitality is incredible," he said.

Some residents of Tijuana even traveled to Los Angeles to support Iran.

During the match against Belgium, Mexican fans wore Tijuana caps and jerseys, with many appearing to adopt Iran as their second team.

"We feel at home in Tijuana, and when they come here to support us, it means a lot," Jahanbakhsh said.

"We'll be here for at least another four or five days. Hopefully, it will be a little longer," he added, referring to Iran's chances of advancing.

Iran opened the tournament with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand and is second in Group G with two points.

Egypt tops the group after defeating New Zealand, while Belgium is third.

Coach Amir Ghalenoei's men now head to Seattle for a crucial match against Egypt, with a place in the round of 16 still within reach.
