Poland will host the championships for the first time in its southern Silesia region, and the European Athletics Council has approved a prize pool worth EUR 3.5 million for all top-eight finishers in each of the 50 events.
The prizes for medal winners will be EUR 30,000 for gold, EUR 15,000 for silver and EUR 10,000 for bronze.
Athletes finishing fourth to eighth will be awarded EUR 5,000, EUR 4,000, EUR 3,000, EUR 2,000 and EUR 1,000 respectively.
Previous championships in Rome in 2024 and Birmingham this year awarded ten EUR 50,000 bonuses for outstanding performances.
European Athletics chief Dobromir Karamarinov said the aim is to bring Europe's best athletes to Poland and create memorable championships.
Polish Athletics Association (PZLA) head Sebastian Chmara called Chorzów 2028 a flagship project for Polish athletics.
"Poland will host Europe’s most important stadium athletics event for the first time in its history," he said.
"Together with our partners, the regional authorities and the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, we are doing everything we can to make the championships a great success, both organisationally and in sporting terms," he added.
The championships are scheduled to take place from June 3 to 8, 2028.
