Basketball: Poland eye World Cup quarterfinals after win over Russia

Poland on Friday beat Russia in their fourth straight victory at the Basketball World Cup in China, taking a big step toward qualifying for the tournament’s quarterfinals.

The Polish men's national basketball team, coached by American Mike Taylor, won 79-74 in the closely fought second-round opener in the southern Chinese city of Foshan, adding to its successful run in the tournament.

Poland on Wednesday overpowered Ivory Coast 80-63 in their previous World Cup game in Beijing.

The Poles on Monday beat hosts China 79-76 in overtime, securing a berth in the World Cup’s round of 16 and also automatically advancing to a qualifying tournament for next year’s Tokyo Olympics.

The Poles on Saturday defeated Venezuela 80-69 in their opening match of the tournament in Beijing, chalking up their first World Cup win in 52 years.

Poland will on Sunday take on Argentina in their next match in the second round of the 2019 Basketball World Cup, which is being held in China by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the sport's world governing body.
