Andrzej Bargiel, who rose to fame last year for successfully skiing down the planet’s second-highest peak, K2, aimed to ski down Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen in a feat that would be a world first.

But the Everest attempt was called off due to a chunk of ice, 50 metres high and 30 metres long, which is hanging over a trail and might fall at any moment, Andrzej Bargiel said on his Facebook page on Monday.

He added that difficult weather conditions have also weighed in on the decision.

"We have been here for a long time, there is no progress and so no acclimatisation beyond the base camp. We have to end our expedition because that is the most reasonable thing to do," the climber said.
