Despite the 39th-minute strike by the Pole and their initial 2-0 lead, Hertha lost 2-3 after extra time and were eliminated from the German Cup.

The match marked Piątek’s first starting-lineup appearance for the German Bundesliga club after he joined it on a long-term contract from Italy’s AC Milan at the end of last month.

Piątek made his debut for Hertha in their 0-0 draw at home to Schalke on Friday, coming on as a substitute in the 63rd minute.

Before joining Jürgen Klinsmann’s side, the 24-year-old Poland international netted 16 goals in 41 appearances for Milan.

Earlier Piątek scored a remarkable 19 goals in 21 games for Genoa, another Italian Serie A outfit for whom he played until January last year.
