Tennis: Poland’s Świątek through to 2nd round in Adelaide

Poland’s Iga Świątek has made it through to the second round of the Adelaide International tennis tournament in Australia.

The 19-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 18 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), saw off American player Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-4 in their first-round encounter on Tuesday.

Up next for the rising Polish tennis star at the post-Australian Open tournament in Adelaide is home favourite Maddison Inglis.

Świątek reached the fourth round of the women’s singles at this year's Australian Open, where she lost to Romania's Simona Halep.

The Polish teenager in October won the French Open, claiming her maiden Grand Slam title and becoming the first Pole to lift a Grand Slam singles trophy.
