Poland wins gold, bronze in women's hammer throw at Tokyo Olympics

Poland's Anita Włodarczyk on Tuesday became an Olympic champion for the third successive time, with countrywoman Malwina Kopron securing the bronze in the women's hammer throw in Tokyo.

Włodarczyk achieved a hat-trick of Olympic titles thanks to a 78.48-metre throw, while China’s Zheng Wang won the silver medal after a best effort of 77.03m.

Poland’s Kopron landed the bronze with a farthest throw of 75.49m, while another Pole, Joanna Fiodorow, finished seventh with 73.83m.

Włodarczyk, who is approaching her 36th birthday, is also a world-record holder (82.98m) and has dominated the discipline for a decade.

In addition to winning gold medals at the 2012 Olympics in London (after the original winner was disqualified for doping), Rio in 2016 and now Tokyo, she has four world championships and four European titles to her name.
