With a time of 1:45.39, Dobek finished narrowly behind Kenya's winner Emmanuel Korir and second-placed Ferguson Rotich.

His bronze was the first ever Olympic medal for Poland in the 800m track-and-field event.

Polish President Andrzej Duda congratulated the runner in a Twitter post saying it was "another beautiful day for Poland in Tokyo."
Meanwhile, Poland's Wojciech Nowicki became an Olympic champion, and his countryman Paweł Fajdek took the bronze in the men's hammer throw on Wednesday.
Nowicki produced a best throw of 82.52 metres, while Fajdek managed 81.53 metres.
Norway's Eivind Henriksen took the silver in the event.

Polish athletes have so far earned 10 medals, three gold, three silver and four bronze, at the Games in Japan.
