Slovenian champion Janja Garnbret claimed the first gold medal in women's climbing on Friday as the sport made its debut appearance at the Olympic Games.

Japan's Miho Nonaka grabbed the silver, while countrywoman Akiyo Noguchi took home the bronze.

The Olympic climbing competition consists of speed climbing, bouldering, and a timed climb that tests endurance. The combined score from the three events determines the overall winner.

Poland's Mirosław on Friday broke the women's world record for speed climbing to win the first leg of the three-event Olympic final.
