Following last week’s meeting between President Andrzej Duda and Cezary Kulesza, who leads Poland’s football federation (PZPN), Cash was on Tuesday officially granted Polish citizenship by the governor of the central Mazowieckie province, Konstanty Radziwiłł, the state PAP news agency reported.
“Congratulations and best of luck on the pitch!” the Polish president tweeted.
Cash also took to Twitter, thanking Poland’s authorities in a series of Polish-language posts.
“Thank you, Mr. President,” he wrote to Duda. “It’s an honour and an enormously important moment for me and my family. I will give my all on the pitch. Go Poland!”
“Thank you for your help, Mr. Chairman,” he also wrote to Kulesza. “I can’t wait to put on a jersey with the Polish eagle!”
Poland’s coach Paulo Sousa is expected to include Cash in the squad for November’s crunch World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary, the PAP news agency reported.
A right-back who can double as a winger, Cash plays for Aston Villa in the English Premier League, widely regarded as the best soccer league in the world.
He was born in Slough near London to a Polish mother, and his grandparents are also Polish, PAP reported.
His father Stuart Cash is an English retired football player.
