“I am excited, because simply qualifying for the tournament makes me proud,” Świątek said, as only the top eight singles and doubles players of the season are featured in this prestigious year-end championship.
Świątek is only the second ever Pole to qualify for the event, after Agnieszka Radwańśka who won the championship in 2015.
Świątek lost two of her previous matches against Sakkari this year.
In September the Polish tennis player moved up two spots to a career-high No. 4 in the rankings by the Women's Tennis Association, as she reached the semifinals of the Ostrava Open tennis tournament in the Czech Republic, where she lost 4-6, 5-7 to Sakkari.
The WTA Finals tournament is held at the Akron Tennis Stadium in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara, the second largest city in Mexico.
