Hurkacz came to London straight after winning the Halle Open grass-court tournament in Germany, where he beat the world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the final.
However, the 25-year-old world No. 10 lost the first two sets against Fokina, before fighting back to level the scores. The fifth set went right to the wire, and Hurkacz at one point was 6-3 up in the super-tie break, but the victory slipped out of his grasp. It was Fokina who triumphed in the super-tie break, 10-8, sending the Pole out of Wimbledon at the first hurdle.
Meanwhile, Kamil Majchrzak lost to Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets, 6:7(5), 2:6, 5:7.
Wins for Poland’s Chwalińska, Kawa
There was better news for Poland in the women’s tournament, even though world No. 1 Iga Świątek doesn’t play until Tuesday.
Debutant Maja Chwalińska impressed, beating Olympic Champion Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, 6:0, 7:5.
Meanwhile, Katarzyna Kawa also progressed to the second round after winning 6:4, 3:6, 7:5 against Canada’s Rebecca Marino.
Magda Linette was due to play Mexico’s Fernanda Contreras Gomez on Monday evening.
On Tuesday, Iga Świątek is set to play Croatia’s Jana Fett on Wimbledon’s famed Centre Court.
