Hurkacz will now face Canada's Denis Shapovalov for a place in the last 16.
Earlier on Wednesday, Poland’s Iga Świątek cruised past Colombia's Camila Osorio to enter the third round of the women’s singles at the Australian Open.
Meanwhile, countrywoman Magda Linette beat Egypt's Mayar Sherif to advance to the second round of the women's singles in Melbourne.
The 2023 Australian Open runs until January 29.
