Tennis: Poland’s Fręch reaches 2nd round of Madrid Open

Poland’s Magdalena Fręch has made it through to the second round of the women’s singles at the Madrid Open tennis tournament in Spain.

The 25-year-old Pole, who is ranked world No. 100 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated Italian Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-3 in their first-round encounter in the Spanish capital on Wednesday.

Up next for the Polish qualifier at the clay-court tournament in Madrid is third-seeded American Jessica Pegula.

Meanwhile, Poland's Iga Świątek, the world No. 1 in women's tennis, and 19th-ranked countrywoman Magda Linette both had a bye in the first round of the Madrid Open.
