Football: Lewandowski strikes twice as Barcelona seal La Liga title

Polish star striker Robert Lewandowski scored a double as his Barcelona side beat Espanyol 4-2 to secure the championship of the Spanish La Liga on Sunday.

The Polish goal machine, who plays for Barcelona and also captains Poland’s national squad, found the back of the net in the 11th and 40th minutes of the game.

Barcelona are 14 points ahead of Real Madrid with four games of the season left. It is their 27th league title overall and their first since 2019.

Lewandowski has scored 21 goals in the Spanish top flight this season and leads the table among the division's top scorers.

Striker of the year

The 34-year-old last year won the 2022 Gerd Müller Trophy for the best striker of the season at the France Football Ballon d'Or awards in Paris.

In July 2022, he was officially unveiled as a player for Barcelona after the Spanish giants confirmed they reached an agreement with German champions Bayern Munich for the transfer of the Polish striker.

Top scorer in Europe, FIFA Best Men's Player 

In May last year, Lewandowski was named the top scorer in Europe's biggest football leagues last season, with 35 goals for Bayern Munich. The Polish marksman won the annual European Golden Shoe award for the second time in a row, finishing well ahead of the rest of the pack.

The Pole in January 2022 won world soccer governing body FIFA’s 2021 Best Men's Player award, beating Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Egypt's Mohamed Salah.
