In the high-profile game, Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola, beat Inter Milan 1-0 in front of some 75,000 fans at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul and hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Saturday night congratulated Marciniak on his performance in charge of the match.

"You can't have a good performance without a great conductor," Morawiecki said in a tweet.

"Szymon Marciniak was the best man on the pitch tonight," he added.

Morawiecki also congratulated "Manchester City and Pep Guardiola."

"Patience and hard work have been rewarded," he wrote.

Marciniak, 42, was the first Pole to officiate a Champions League final.

He was assisted by Polish linesmen Paweł Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz.

Marciniak and his team of officials in December refereed the World Cup final between Argentina and France.
