Athletics: Poland’s Kaczmarek, Nowicki win at Diamond League meet in Chorzów

The prestigious event took place at the Silesian Stadium in the southern Polish city of Chorzów on Sunday, public broadcaster TVP Sport reported.

At the star-packed 2023 Kamila Skolimowska Memorial Meet, Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek earned one of the biggest cheers of the afternoon as she won the women’s 400m in a meeting record of 49.48, the World Athletics website reported.

The Pole, who took the silver medal at last year’s European Athletics Championships in  Munich, produced an impressive finish in Chorzów as she recorded her best-ever result, Polsat News reported.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Wojciech Nowicki won the hammer throw event with a best effort of 80,02m, earning Olympic qualification with ease, according to news outlets.

Poland’s five-time hammer throw world champion Paweł Fajdek finished fifth with a best effort of 73,93m, Polsat News reported.

Polish sprinter Ewa Swoboda finished third in the women’s 100m, with a European season’s best and her personal best ever of 10,94 seconds, also earning Olympic qualification, according to officials.

Fellow Polish sprinter Pia Skrzyszowska came eighth in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12,67 seconds, which was enough to secure her a spot at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Polsat News reported.

Elsewhere, winners included Sweden’s world-record holder Mondo Duplantis, who triumphed in the pole vault with 6,01m, World Athletics reported.

On one of his previous appearances in Poland, in the northern city of Toruń in 2020, Duplantis broke the pole vault indoor world record, news outlets reported.
