Świątek on Wednesday beat countrywoman Magda Linette 6-1, 6-1 in the third round of the women's singles in the Chinese capital, while Garcia won 6-3, 6-2 against Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina.

Świątek has previously defeated Garcia twice, but lost a match in the quarterfinals of the Warsaw Open tournament last year, when the Frenchwoman went on to win the competition in the Polish capital.

Meanwhile, Linette and her US doubles partner Peyton Stearns are set to face Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia and Russia's Veronika Kudermetova in the women's doubles quarterfinals at the China Open on Thursday.

The 2023 China Open runs until Sunday.

Poland's Świątek last month lost her world No. 1 spot to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka after spending 75 weeks on top of the world rankings.
