Tennis: Poland's Świątek through to China Open semifinals

Poland’s world No. 2 Iga Świątek has booked her place in the semifinals of the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing, with a hard-fought win over France's Caroline Garcia.

Świątek beat Garcia 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the women's singles in the Chinese capital on Friday, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

The 22-year-old Pole will now face American teenager Coco Gauff for a place in the championship match at the hard-court tournament in Beijing.

The 2023 China Open runs until Sunday.

Świątek last month lost her world No. 1 spot to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka after spending 75 weeks on top of the world rankings.
