Tennis: Poland’s Świątek starts week 120 as WTA world No. 1

Poland's Iga Świątek has started her 120th week at the top of the Women's Tennis Association's (WTA) world rankings, with a 2,169-point lead over her nearest rival.

The Polish player last week reached the quarterfinals of the US Open Grand Slam tournament in New York, where she was stunned by home favourite Jessica Pegula 2-6, 4-6.

Last month, Świątek claimed bronze in the women's singles competition at the Paris Olympics after defeating Anna Schmiedlová of Slovakia in the third-place match.

In June, the 23-year-old Pole won the French Open Grand Slam tournament in Paris for the fourth time.

Świątek in November regained her spot at the top of the world rankings in women's tennis after winning the season-ending WTA Finals tournament in Mexico.

The Polish star, coached by countrymaTomasz Wiktorowski, now leads the WTA rankings with 10,885 points, ahead of Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, with 8,716 points, and Pegula, with 6,220.

Sabalenka won the 2024 US Open, beating Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in the championship match on Saturday.

The US Open, held on hard courts, was the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.

The second-highest ranked Polish female player, Magda Linette, moved up one spot to No. 41 in the latest WTA rankings.

Meanwhile, countrywomaMagdalena Fręch retained her 43rd place in the new world rankings, which were released on Monday.
