Poland came up short after a hard-fought battle. Magda Linette was defeated by Lucia Bronzetti, but Iga Świątek evened the score by beating Jasmine Paolini.
In the decisive doubles match, Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, both seasoned doubles players, proved stronger.
The Polish team put up a fight and had their chances, especially in the first set when they missed three set points. However, the Italians took control in the final stretch, winning the last six games.
For Poland, it was a historic first appearance in the semifinals, while Italy advanced to the final stage.
"I fought for every point. Maybe I could have played better on the set point, but I made a tactical error. We fought until the end and gave it our all," said Iga Świątek after the doubles, which she played right after her singles contest. The athlete admitted that she had never felt so tired before.
The second semifinal will take place on Tuesday, with the British team facing Slovakia. The final is scheduled for Wednesday.
