Polish angler hooks 130kg 'river monster' in Spain

When Polish fisherman Michał Chełkowski set off on a fishing adventure to Spain's River Ebro, little did he know he'd be wrestling with a creature that seems straight out of a sci-fi movie.

Chełkowski landed a colossal catfish, weighing over 130 kilograms and stretching an astonishing 268 centimeters in length. To put that into perspective, that's about the length of a small car—or enough to make any fisherman's tale sound entirely believable for once.

"Once again, I had incredible luck," Chełkowski shared on his Facebook page. "This time, along with my guests who flew in with me for the fishing trip to Spain, I managed to outsmart a catfish measuring a whopping 268 cm. This fish is a true giant inhabiting the Ebro River, almost like something from another planet—over 130 kg! I hope I'll be able to catch an even bigger Kaiju in the future."

While his catch surpasses the Polish record, Chełkowski won't be entering the record books back home, as the fish wasn't caught in Polish waters. But that doesn't dampen his spirits—or his grip strength, presumably strengthened by hauling in such a behemoth.

The current world record for the largest catfish stands at 285 cm, held by Italian angler Alessandro Biancardi, who achieved the feat in May 2023.
