Świątek, who had a first-round bye, dropped the opening set after twice being broken but steadied her serve to edge the second and then raced through the decider, surrendering only two games.
The 22-year-old Pole will next face Czech Linda Nosková, who defeated Argentina’s María Lourdes Carle 7-5, 6-1 in the second round.
The three-time French Open champion is seeking to defend her title at the clay-court tournament in Madrid after a quarterfinal exit in Stuttgart earlier this month.
Świątek lifted the trophy in the Spanish capital last year but is still chasing her first title under new coach Wim Fissette.
