Polish tennis star Iga Świątek, the defending Madrid Open champion, was scheduled to play Russia’s Diana Shnaider in the round of 16 on Monday, but the match was postponed due to a widespread power outage.
Originally set for 1 p.m. local time, the match will now take place on Tuesday, 29 April at 12:00 noon.
The blackout, which began around 12:30 p.m. on 28 April, affected much of mainland Spain along with parts of Portugal and France, disrupting traffic lights, metro service, and other infrastructure in Madrid.
By early Tuesday, Spain’s national grid operator Red Eléctrica confirmed that more than 99% of the electricity supply had been restored and all substations were back online.
