Polish actor Piotr Machalica dies aged 65

Prominent Polish actor Piotr Machalica died at a Warsaw hospital on Monday at the age of 65.

The news of his passing was announced on his official Facebook page.

A well-known face on the silver screen in Poland for decades, Machalica created many memorable film as well as theater roles, including in movies such as Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Decalogue: Nine, Marek Koterski’s Day of the Wacko, and Tomasz Bagiński’s Jaga.

President Andrzej Duda, in a tweet, paid tribute to Machalica as an outstanding figure in Polish theater, film and music.

He said the late actor "was able to not only entertain audiences with his roles, but also encourage reflection."

During his career as an actor, Machalica worked in a number of Warsaw theaters, including the Powszechny, Polonia and Och-Teatr.

Actress Krystyna Janda, who runs the Polonia and Och-Teatr, said on Facebook that Machalica was “a wonderful man and a great artist” who took part in hundreds of performances and also sang in many music concerts.

Machalica performed songs by the likes of Russian singer-songwriter Bulat Okudzhava and French poet Georges Brassens.
