Polish actor Ryszard Filipski dead at 87

Prominent Polish actor Ryszard Filipski has died at the age of 87.

Filipski died on October 22, but the news of his deathas he requested before he passed away—was only announced after his funeral was held on October 26, state news agency PAP reported on Friday.

Filipski was born in 1934 in Lviv. His most notable early roles were in films such as Andrzej Wajda's Canal (1956) and a 1957 adaptation of Aleksander Fredro's Zemsta (Vengeance), directed by Bohdan Korzeniewski and Antoni Bohdziewicz.

In 1956, Filipski played one of the main roles in the drama Koniec nocy (The End of the Night), in which he co-starred with renowned Polish cinema stars Zbigniew Cybulski and Roman Polański.

Filipski went down in the history of Polish cinema chiefly as Soroka in the 1974 adaptation of Jerzy Hoffman's Potop (The Deluge) and as Major Henryk Dobrzański in Bohdan Poręba's 1973 film Hubal.

For the latter role, Filipski won an award at the International Film Festival in Panama and he also claimed the Golden Camera award for best actor from Film magazine.

In 1980, Filipski played Marshal Józef Piłsudski in Zamach (Assassination), which he also directed.

After that, he withdrew from filmmaking for many years. He only made a comeback in 2003 in the series Zaginiona (Lost) by Andrzej Kostenko.

He then starred in the crime drama television series Kryminalni and also appeared in Patryk Vega’s 2005 film Pitbull.
