The contest is named after Stanisław Moniuszko, dubbed “the father of Polish national opera.”

His operatic arias and songs are among the compulsory pieces on the event’s programme.

Over 80 singers compete for EUR 15,000 award

More than 80 singers are taking part in the competition, representing countries from across the world, including Mexico, Brazil and China, as well as the Republic of South Africa, the United States and Canada.

Contestants are set to vie for the top prize of EUR 15,000 and a host of invitations to many prestigious opera and concert venues.

A list of prizewinners is to be announced on June 11.

International jury

Performances will be judged by an international jury, chaired by John Allison, editor of Opera magazine.

The panel also includes Paul Hopper, Associate Artistic Administrator of the Metropolitan Opera in New York; Peter Mario Katona, Casting Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; and Roberto Mauro of the Canadian Opera Company; as well as prominent Polish singers Ewa Podleś and Mariusz Kwiecień.

A prestigious vocal contest

Launched in 1992 and held every three years, the Moniuszko Competition is one of the most prestigious events of its kind. It has been a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions since 2019.

All auditions are streamed live on vod.teatrwielki.pl. The final will also be broadcast by operavision.eu, Poland’s state-run TVP Kultura channel and Polish Radio 2.

This year’s event coincides with the 150th anniversary of Moniuszko’s death, on June 4, 1872 in Warsaw.

In addition to several operas: The Haunted Manor, Halka, The Raftsman, The Countess and Verbum Nobile, Moniuszko’s output comprises several operettas, over 250 songs, mass cycles, cantatas, and chamber compositions.
