The distinguished Polish abstract painter Stefan Gierowski has passed away at the age of 97.

Stefan Gierowski, professor, draughtsman and painter, passed away on Sunday at the age of 97.

Born in 1925 in Częstochowa, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków after the war. At first his paintings were figurative, but after 1957 he moved to abstraction, ceasing even to give his works titles, preferring Roman numerals.

Among his many individual and group exhibitions was the retrospective: Stefan Gierowski, Paintings 1957-2000 in the National Museum in Poznań - in 2000.
