Pawlikowski--as in the case of his earlier features Ida and Cold War--will be both the director and screenwriter of the movie, under the working title of The Island.
Among the film's producers is Poland's Ewa Puszczyńska, who also worked with Pawlikowski on his previous two films.
The new dramatic thriller is loosely based on a true story. It follows a 1930s American couple who decide to escape from civilization and build their private paradise on a deserted island.
Their dream is disrupted when a millionaire passes by the island and the couple become a tabloid sensation. Then, a self-proclaimed, larger-than-life countess and her two lovers arrive at the establishment with a plan to take over the island and build a luxury hotel.
As stated in the official description, that sets off a psychological war, with “seduction and jealousy” turning into “sexual infidelity, betrayal and eventually murder.”
Pawlikowski, “one of the most respected auteurs” of contemporary cinema, won an Academy Award for best foreign language feature for his 2013 movie Ida. He also won three Oscar nominations for Cold War (2018).
